Los Angeles residents consume this drink every day, but processed orange juice is a relatively new phenomenon. In fact, it is an invention of 20th-century marketers because a problem arose and a solution had to be found. It is about a huge number of oranges, which people did not know how to use.

But we should start from the very beginning. In the early 1900s, oranges from Florida and California were literally fighting for American consumers. The oranges were eaten fresh or juiced. Two varieties of oranges grew in California and four in Florida. In 1909, the manufacturers decided to turn orange juice into a commercial business, thus selling the beloved drink in a can. Unfortunately, canned orange juice was not in demand. In her book, historian Alissa Hamilton confirms this, citing specific data – only 0.01 pounds of canned orange juice was consumed per person in 1930. This is indeed a drop in the bucket, especially considering the 8.6 kg of oranges consumed per person in the same year.

Vitamin C

Having failed with the canned orange juice campaign, it was time for the next step. Since the 1920s, the discovery of vitamins and the study of their benefits has become a relevant topic. Therefore, the requirement to consume a sufficient number of oranges was driven by the high content of vitamin C.

At the same time, nutritionist Elmer McCollum popularized a mysterious disease called acidosis. According to him, the disease was caused by the consumption of large amounts of such foods as milk and bread. The expert insisted that acidosis could be treated by eating a lot of lettuce and citrus fruits. Actually, it was later found out that this was the wrong way to cure the disease, but the citrus industry had successfully exploited the new fear of the citizens. Doctors also recommended eating oranges whenever possible.

New experiments and investments

At that time, canned juice was also far from reaching its peak of popularity. The Florida Department of Citrus was willing to invest in new experiments, since it was necessary to create a form of citrus that US Army soldiers (during World War II) would happily consume rather than throw away.

Researchers tried to condense orange juice like milk. The experiment totally failed, resulting in a brownish mixture that lacked flavor

The next step was evaporating some water under pressure, mixing it into a concentrate and freezing

Thereafter, they tried to dilute the fresh juice with concentrate, making a drink that was at least drinkable.

Increasing demand

In the 1940s, tree planting increased significantly, and oranges were used to make frozen concentrate that later became cooled juice. As a result, it was hard to differentiate this drink from fresh orange juice. It was a genuine breakthrough, an innovation linked to the continuous and massive overproduction of oranges.

But the next stage in the history of orange juice was controversial. Manufacturers started adding various flavorings to packaged juice, which led to lawsuits. The people were concerned about whether such juice could be considered natural.

Eventually, US consumers became so familiar with this taste that orange juice turned into an integral part of a full breakfast. The practice of squeezing orange juice yourself has become obsolete. It was also facilitated by the busy and extremely stressful lifestyle of the citizens. American consumers have started preferring convenient and fast food options that don’t require much time.

Orange Julius

Modern Los Angeles residents are very familiar with the popular cocktail chain under this name, owned by Dairy Queen.

The story of the orange Julius is interesting. Originally, it was a small, even unremarkable orange juice shop in Los Angeles. The owner received only $20 in sales per day. He had no idea what a bright, dreamy future awaited this place.

The creation of Orange Julius changed everything. The original recipe used fresh orange juice. Julius Freed invented a beverage that was significantly easier to drink. It consisted of the following ingredients:

● milk

● egg white

● sugar and vanilla

● fresh orange juice

● ice.

Thus, Julius Freed successfully created a creamy and foamy drink well-known to modern citizens. Once the owner introduced the new drink to customers, sales increased five-fold, to $100 a day. The beverage has become so popular that it prompted the launch of a whole chain.

The peak of popularity

Interestingly enough, by the 1950s and 1960s, drinks by Julius Freed were available all over the country. The favorite beverage of Los Angeles residents was sold even at the state and county fairs. There is even a photo of the actress Pamela Searle holding a drink in her hand. It was taken in Los Angeles in 1959.

What is known about Julius Freed?

Soon, everyone called him “Julius in Orange”. It is known that he once owned a cigar shop in Montana, but then moved to California. According to local newspapers, it happened around the 1900s. The alleged reasons why he had to leave Butte were bankruptcy and several illegal gambling arrests.

In 1926, Freed opened a fresh juice shop. The spot was perfectly chosen – the center of Los Angeles, on the first floor of 820 S. Broadway. Modern residents of Los Angeles know that it is now a sunglasses, mobile phone and second-hand store.

However, some historical sources indicate that the real first Orange Julius was created not by Julius Freed, but by his real estate agent, Willard “Bill” Hamlin. Historians believe that he convinced Freed to create a secret formula of vanilla powder crushed with ice, making the delicious Creamsicle juice.

Hamlin even invested $6,800 in the production, becoming a business partner with Freed and building contractor William Larkin. Hamlin is known to have a sensitive stomach, which is why he was interested in chemistry and drinkable beverages.

Orange Julius cocktails

The modern recipe follows the original, the only difference is that there is a variant of this drink with a powdered mixture.

The cocktails combine the vanilla and orange flavors of Creamsicle and the original Orange Julius. The locals like to add soda and rum, but previously it was impossible due to Prohibition. So, this is the story of orange juice, which was once heavily forced upon consumers because of the huge amount of oranges, which nobody knew how to use. The history of the original Orange Julius is equally interesting, as well as the cocktails that can be created based on the drink – you only need imagination and a desire to explore.

Orange Julius was a classic American beverage of the 1920s, and before that, it was pure orange juice.
