Because of the natural rock formations around the tunnel, this location earned its mystical and mysterious name. As you approach this location, you will notice the profile of a horned beast.

The truth is that this area has long been the site of torrential floods that flooded and ruined Pasadena, the Alhambra and parts of Los Angeles. Severe floods in 1914 and 1916 necessitated the construction of the first flood dam in the Los Angeles area. It got its name from a terrifying rock situated nearby.

Legend has it that the tunnel represents the portal to the afterlife. The natives, for example, believed that there was a coyote spirit in the gorge. The water that pours down the rapids of Arroyo Seco sounds like laughter or thuds which contributes to the place’s mystique.

According to locals, the infamous Devil’s Gate in Pasadena is a true “gateway to hell”.

Ritual magnet

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Jack Parsons believed that the location had mystical meaning. He was an ardent occultist and one of the founders of NASA JPL. A man frequently performed occult rituals in the Devil’s Gate area.

In the 1940s, this location became a ritual magnet. At the time, a group of occultists led by L. Ron Hubbard, along with some of Aleister Crowley’s followers, attempted to conjure Satan from within and become a powerful and wealthy occult order.

Decades passed before the Devil’s Gate became a popular destination for hikers and paranormal researchers. This location has been filmed and featured in a number of television shows.

Mysterious disappearances of children

Another unresolved mystery is the disappearance of children. Over a four-year period (from 1956 to 1960), four children suddenly vanished near the Devil’s Gate Reservoir. In 1970, Mac Ray Edwards confessed to kidnapping and murdering two children. Prior to it, he was apprehended in a failed attempt to kidnap three girls in Sylmar.

The bodies of two youngsters kidnapped by the man near the Devil’s Gate were never discovered.

Inmate Edwards committed suicide in his cell in San Quentin. He couldn’t bear the prospect of a death sentence.

How to get there? Setting a route

You can stop by Oak Grove Park and walk down the trail to Devil’s Gate. There is a golf course in the park. The Devil’s Gate is located on the outskirts of the Los Angeles mountain town of La Canada Flintridge. This is a unique park space because there is a massive concrete dam on the ground as well as a busy highway.

Then you need to pass through the dam. You will undoubtedly arrive at your destination because there is a route sign that offers directions and helps people who are unfamiliar with the area.

Furthermore, the “portal to hell” is underlined with graffiti. Viewers frequently relate such a tunnel to action movies from the 1980s, which were filmed someplace in New York.

The Devil’s Gate is at the bottom of a dam, encircled by a watery moat. There is an exceedingly weird and creepy-looking unusable swing located next to a fancy wooden structure. It is too high even for tall people, let alone children.

Inside, you’ll find full darkness and graffiti-covered walls. Despite its mysticism and creepiness, the beauty and mystery of this place continue to draw visitors and adventurers.

There is a place on the outskirts of bustling and fast-paced Los Angeles that is steeped in mystery and mysterious stories.
