Then he established a winery. Vignes was later recognized as the founder of the California wine industry, and a street in Los Angeles was named for him. The wine business swiftly established itself as one of the most economically significant and popular industries in Southern California.

In the early 1890s, vineyards were planted in Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The area’s temperate Mediterranean climate makes it perfect for growing fruit grapes. By the late 1880s, Los Angeles had established itself as the finest wine-growing area in the entire state of California.

How was the winery established?

Santo Cambianica built San Antonio Winery on Lamar Street in downtown Los Angeles, dedicating it to his patron Saint Anthony. Santo Cambianica gained a reputation as an honest, hardworking and deeply devout Catholic. It only took a few years for him to save money, establish connections and integrate into the Italian-American community before he could start his own business and pursue the American dream.

By 1933, almost all of Los Angeles’ 100 wineries had been affected by the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression. In 1919, the United States Congress passed the Volstead Act, effectively prohibiting the production of alcohol in America and shaking the wine industry. As a result, most wineries in and around Los Angeles have gone through difficult times. However, San Antonio Winery resisted. Santo received permission from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to produce wines for sacramental and religious uses. As a result, his close ties with the church helped save the winery.

Development of the wine industry

In 1936, Santo invited his sixteen-year-old nephew Stefano Riboli from Italy to assist with the family business. Stefano soon met his future wife, Maddalena Satragni. The story has it that when he first saw her, she was working on a tractor. Stefano married Maddelena ten years later, after actively courting her.

When World War II broke out, Stefano Riboli returned to the United States. When Stefano married Maddalena Satragni in 1946, the winery already had an established name in the California wine industry. At the time, the wine business was concentrated in Southern California. However, by the 1950s, Northern California wine regions gained traction and eventually dominated the sector.

Santo, Stefano and Maddalena, on the other hand, chose to stay with their families in Los Angeles, where they had been rewarded with good fortune. Santo Cambianica died in 1956, leaving it to Stefano to carry on the business for future generations. Stefano acquired full ownership of San Antonio Winery.

Between the 1950s and 1960s, Stefano and Maddalena began looking for land and grapes in the north, realizing that the quality of grapes cultivated in Northern California was superior to grapes grown in Southern California. With the help of their children, they bought property in vineyards in Monterey County in the 1970s and in the prestigious Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley in the 1980s. They also built connections and formed business partnerships with winegrowers around the state.

Maddalena was the one responsible for the majority of the innovations and novelties in the winery. She was the one who came up with the concept of opening the tasting room, which the family claims was the first in LA. Later, she got the notion of selling sandwiches with wine. The restaurant was the next stage, and it naturally offered some of Maddalena’s favorite dishes. Maddalena also encouraged the family to invest in vineyards in prime areas to ensure the family’s history would last forever.

The Paso Robles region, located along California’s central coast, was of particular interest to the family. Paso Robles is a fertile land thanks to its favorable climate. There were two vineyards established here. The business also owns a modern winery and a spacious tasting room.

Four generations of the family worked on the success of the winery. Their vineyards are situated in Paso Robles, Monterey and Napa Valley. San Antonio Winery is one of California’s most award-winning wineries. With the future in mind, the family has made efforts to gain more control over the winemaking process, from growing the grapes to bottling the wine.

Two Paso Robles vineyards are certified organic. They reclaim wastewater, have their own sewage treatment plant, use 100% solar energy and recycle all waste in wineries.

What makes the wine unique?

San Simeon wines are defined by their distinctive soils and the effect of the Pacific Ocean, which cools the vineyards at night, giving the drink a distinct freshness. As the flagship wine of the Riboli family, one of California’s oldest wine families, San Simeon wines are the result of centuries of experience and dedication. Their wines are produced exclusively from certified sustainable vineyards.

The winery’s range includes:

“Windstream Chardonnay” comes from the Sarmento vineyard, located in the highlands of Santa Lucia. The location is well-known for having an ideal climate for cultivating burgundy varieties. This chardonnay is briefly fermented in French oak barrels, which gives it a pear and apple flavor.

“San Simeon Pinot Noir”. The San Simeon vineyards, located in the Santa Lucia Highlands, are perfect for Pinot Noir production. This wine is crafted from 100% estate-grown fruit.

“San Simeon Syrah” has excellent acidity, structure and color.

“Opaque Petit Verdot”. This wine is produced at the Stefano vineyards in Paso Robles, which are named after the family patriarch. This wine is an excellent accompaniment to a good steak.

The Riboli family has established a firm commitment to producing high-quality grapes from the estate’s vineyards in two of the most prestigious regions along California’s Central Coast: Monterey and Paso Robles. Grapes are carefully cultivated to produce berries with intense flavors and aromas. So, wines of the greatest quality and character are produced using innovative winemaking techniques.

San Antonio Winery is an excellent spot to sample some of the best award-winning wines.
