Thanks to the existing national connections, innovative urban strategies are subsequently implemented at the state and national levels. As a result, American cities serve as the driving force behind positive environmental changes.

Thanks to the implementation of federal standards and state laws regulating vehicle exhaust gasses, American cars and buses emit significantly fewer pollutants into the atmosphere than ever before. Some cities have gone a step further, fully experimenting with zero-emission fuel.

Los Angeles is well-known for its smog, which is a combination of particle pollution and ozone. The prevalence of these pollutants occurs as a result of many factors, including the use of fossil fuels, particularly in automobiles, ships and planes, as well as industrial use and forest fires.

Los Angeles is a recognized leader in lowering carbon emissions. The city has the largest natural gas bus fleet in the United States, with over 2.2 thousand vehicles. According to the city authorities, switching to natural gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 1.36 tons every day.

Other steps are being taken in the area of public transportation. Los Angeles has the country’s largest fleet of clean buses, with 2,500 units running on compressed natural gas. Each such electric bus is capable of transporting 120 passengers over a distance of 275 kilometers without needing extra charging. The city metro is entirely electric.

A large number of residents, including celebrities, have abandoned gasoline-powered cars in favor of hybrid and electric vehicles. Limousines are also among the eco-friendly modes of transportation.

Air pollution and smog as the main environmental problems in the city

Air pollution became an issue in Los Angeles after World War II. The development of effective solutions to this problem took time, as did concerted measures by the government, business representatives and local citizens. In the 1970s, federal laws such as the Clean Air Act and national vehicle emission standards provided a further impetus to the fight against air pollution.

However, the smog did not subside. Real progress occurred only after the advent of catalytic converters, which lower the toxicity of car exhaust gasses.

Fighting air pollution and climate change through regulations, innovation and conservation measures is a top priority for the mayor of Los Angeles. Ambitious goals have been established for air quality, including reducing the number of days when air pollution is hazardous to health and significantly reducing emissions through alternative fuels and sustainable electricity generation.

What is the city’s environmental policy?

More than 15 years ago, all city-owned buildings in Los Angeles began to be designed in accordance with worldwide environmental standards. In the twenty-first century, renewable sources such as solar and wind energy account for over 14% of all urban energy.

The city also has the greatest solid waste recycling rate among all major U.S. cities, at 62%, and the quantity of eco-friendly products sold in the city is quite remarkable. You can buy everything here, from designer shoes made of wood resin to modern furniture created from recycled materials.

Los Angeles was the first city to create a separate collection service for household waste. Since 1989, waste from green and blue garbage cans has been collected separately on roadsides. The city now boasts the greatest recycling rate among major U.S. cities.

Los Angeles has a special ordinance that safeguards all oak, nut and plane trees from any potential damage. There are also ongoing programs for planting new trees. There are more major environmental organizations in the city than anywhere else. These include TreePeople, Heal the Bay and Wright Organic Resource Center. American Oceans is a member of the global human rights organization Oceana. Los Angeles-based media initiatives have national as well as international significance. Even the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Emmys, Grammys, MTV and Teen Choice Awards are all ecologically conscious and encourage environmentally responsible behavior.

As a result of extensive propaganda, corporations that provide water, electricity and gas to city dwellers have created hundreds of programs that encourage people to conserve resources and utilize equipment wisely.

In terms of Los Angeles’ environmental policy, the Environmental Management Division is the primary body in charge of regulating the situation in this area, but it was only a reaction to the tragedy of 1971, which involved the release of massive amounts of DDT with wastewater into the ocean, as well as the subsequent official ban on the insecticide DDT. Other concrete actions in this area are being carried out at a regular pace, which is unsustainable in terms of nature.

A significant amount of changes have been driven by the city’s population

Concerned citizens have a significant role in different initiatives taken by the government. After all, each modern person can do very little to help clean up the world. Even if individuals don’t care about what they leave behind for future generations, what they breathe is still important today. It is also necessary to consider what they eat and drink, which procedures they do and the materials used to make their clothes, which come into constant contact with the skin.

Residents of the city must adhere to the following rules:

Use less plastic. Instead of packaged products, choose by weight, replace plastic containers with glass and plastic bottles with metal and opt for disposable paper dishes for picnics.

Sort the waste into at least two different containers: recyclable and other waste. Do not throw away used clothing. It can be recycled. Brands such as H&M, Gap and Levi’s run promotions in which customers may exchange clothing for discounts on purchases.

Use reusable goods. This also includes coffee cups and shopping bags.

Use as little paper as possible. Convert all bills to electronic format and print only what you need.

You can return outdated or damaged devices at designated reception areas. Do the same with the batteries. Environmental events are frequently held at chain retailers like Ralphs and in schools.

All of these measures are aimed at improving the health of the population.

Many people around the world have never fought for a cleaner environment.
