It is the most visible green space in the city and also its front door: the forty-foot monument sign and its lily pond anchor one of the central blocks, a floodlit 1931 fountain marks the western tip, and a soft granite path threads the whole thing together for anyone who simply wants to walk. The park is older than the city it belongs to, and almost every element you see is a restored piece of a plan drawn in 1931.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Beverly Hills sign and lily pond<\/strong> \u2014 a forty-foot lettered monument first placed on this spot in 1912; the present historically accurate replica went up in 2006 as a gift from the local Rotary Club, and the raised pond in front of it, part of the original 1907 design and lost in the mid-1970s, was re-created in 2014 for the city&#8217;s centennial.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Electric Fountain<\/strong> \u2014 built in 1931 by architect Ralph Carlin Flewelling with sculptor Robert Merrell Gage, crowned by a kneeling Tongva figure praying for rain, its tiled basin ringed with relief panels of California history; a gift from the mother of silent-film star Harold Lloyd and the local women&#8217;s club, its colour-changing night lighting was restored in 2015.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Cactus Garden<\/strong> \u2014 one of the three specialty gardens laid out in 1931 alongside a palm garden and a rose garden, a dense collection of cacti and succulents that was fully restored in 2017 and remains the most photographed planting in the park after the sign.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hymn of Life: Tulips by Yayoi Kusama<\/strong> \u2014 the artist&#8217;s first public commission in the United States, installed here in 2007, refabricated from fibreglass into stainless steel so it could survive outdoors, and returned to the park in spring 2026.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Doheny Fountain and the pergolas<\/strong> \u2014 timber pergolas, low walls, concrete benches and decomposed-granite paths are the character-defining elements of the 1931 master plan, and the fountains now run on recirculated water after the restoration.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The promenade itself<\/strong> \u2014 a continuous soft-surface walking and jogging path along the full length, giving residents a measured route from one end of the city to the other without leaving the centre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Each block is its own small composition, so the park changes character every hundred metres or so as you walk it, and the specialty gardens are spread deliberately rather than clustered.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Foothill rose gardens, planted in beds framed by tightly clipped hedge.<\/li>\n<li>A palm garden, one of the original trio from Ralph Cornell&#8217;s 1931 plan alongside the roses and the cacti.<\/li>\n<li>The Alta Arden Pergola Garden, one of four pergolas built into the 1931 scheme and rebuilt in the restoration.<\/li>\n<li>Fountains, sculpture and memorial markers distributed along the length instead of gathered in one showpiece plaza.<\/li>\n<li>Concrete benches, low walls and seasonal flower beds, all part of the restored historic scheme and now planted with an eye to drought tolerance.<\/li>\n<li>Open lawns wide enough to sit on, mature specimen trees for shade, and one of the busiest leashed dog-walking routes in the city.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Photographers<\/strong> \u2014 the monument sign with its pond is among the most photographed spots in the world, and it is at its best in early light, before the tour groups and the queue for the same frame.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Walkers and runners<\/strong> \u2014 a flat, shaded, nearly two-mile out-and-back on a forgiving surface, needing no planning, no ticket and no hunt for parking.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Art lovers<\/strong> \u2014 the free Beverly Hills Art Show takes over four central blocks twice a year, in May and October, with roughly 250 exhibiting artists in painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, glass and printmaking.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Garden enthusiasts<\/strong> \u2014 three distinct specialty gardens surviving from a single 1931 design, each restored in the last decade rather than replanted from scratch.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families and dog owners<\/strong> \u2014 short, safe, well-lit stretches with benches every few paces, ideal for a stroll rather than an expedition, and step-free almost throughout after the accessibility work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Budget visitors<\/strong> \u2014 the entire park is free, which makes it the cheapest thing to do in one of the most expensive square miles in America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park lies in the heart of Beverly Hills, forming the boundary between the commercial core and the residential grid behind it, so it is genuinely walkable from the shopping streets. Public transport has just improved sharply: the Metro D Line extension opened on May 8, 2026, and its Wilshire\/La Cienega station leaves the eastern part of the park within a short walk, with a second station at Wilshire\/Rodeo due to follow around 2027, which will put trains at the park&#8217;s western end as well. Entry is free, there is no gate, no ticket and no reservation, and the park is open daily from dawn until well into the evening, when the fountains and the sign are lit. Allow around forty-five minutes if you only want the landmark cluster and photographs, or an hour and a half to two hours to walk the full length and back at a comfortable pace. Dogs are welcome on a leash of no more than six feet, and the promenade is level and step-free for most of its run.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is the park at full strength: the roses open, the flowering trees along the promenade come into colour, and the walking weather is close to perfect, with the May edition of the art show filling four blocks in the middle of the season. Summer is dry and warm rather than oppressive, thanks to the ocean only a few miles west, and the evenings are the real reward \u2014 the Electric Fountain&#8217;s colour-changing lighting reads far better after dark, and the lawns cool quickly once the sun drops. Autumn brings the clearest air of the year and the October art show, though a Santa Ana wind spell can push temperatures up sharply for a few days at a time and empty the benches in the middle of the day. Winter is the mildest of any major American city: rain keeps the lawns green, the crowd at the sign thins noticeably, and the low sun through the trees gives photographers the best light they will get all year.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park is older than the city around it. In 1906 the Rodeo Land and Water Company, led by the oilman Burton E. Green, hired the landscape architect Wilbur D. Cook Jr. \u2014 trained in the Olmsted office \u2014 to lay out a new subdivision on land where a run of wells had found water instead of oil. Instead of a plain grid, Cook set aside a three-block greensward for public use, known at first simply as Santa Monica Park; it was developed from 1907 and completed by 1911 with a raised concrete lily pond and plantings of cypress and ficus, and the monument sign followed in 1912. The city itself was incorporated in 1914, and in 1923 its residents voted to stay independent rather than be absorbed by Los Angeles, a campaign fronted by film stars who lived there. Through the late 1920s adjoining parcels were added, and in 1931 the landscape architect Ralph D. Cornell expanded the greenway to twenty-three blocks, drew its master plan and gave it its present name, adding a ten-foot promenade in each block, low walls, concrete benches, clipped hedges, three specialty gardens, four pergolas and three fountains. The original lily pond was replaced by lawn and flower beds by mid-century. A phased restoration then put it back: the sign and pond by early 2014, the Electric Fountain in 2015, the cactus garden and the second phase by 2017, and the whole project completed in 2019 with recirculating fountains, accessible paths and modern irrigation. Friendly people everywhere, except for one older local woman who was utterly annoyed by the parking rules at the parking meter!
