Metro&#8217;s A and E lines stop at Pico station, and the major downtown interchange at 7th Street\/Metro Center puts the A, B, D and E lines within an easy walk; DASH downtown shuttle routes serve the surrounding blocks. Entry to the park is free, with no admission for the lawns, the playground or any part of it, and it keeps standard Los Angeles Recreation and Parks hours. One correction to older guidebooks: the campus beside the park is no longer FIDM, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. FIDM merged into Arizona State University, and the building is now the ASU California Center Grand, home to the ASU FIDM program and the ASU FIDM Museum. Any museum or campus facilities there are separately managed and ticketed where applicable. Half an hour covers the park; longer if you are eating or have children with you.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is when the planting looks best and the downtown lunch crowd returns to the lawns in numbers, with jacaranda color in the surrounding streets. Summer brings heat, and the value of Halprin&#8217;s design shows: the trees and the water feature make the park several degrees more bearable than the pavement around it, and midday is busy for exactly that reason. Autumn stays warm in Los Angeles and is arguably the most comfortable season here, with the light lower and the crowds thinner. Winter is mild, occasionally wet, and quiet \u2014 the best time to actually read the design, since with fewer people in it the sequence of outdoor rooms becomes obvious in a way it never is at lunchtime.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Plans for a new downtown park were set in motion in the mid-1970s, with early schemes proposing a man-made lake; rising land costs delayed the project for years. The result was the first new park built in downtown Los Angeles since Pershing Square in the nineteenth century \u2014 a gap of more than a hundred years in a district that had grown enormously in the meantime. The designer was Lawrence Halprin (1916\u20132009), among the most influential American landscape architects of the twentieth century, and Grand Hope Park is his last downtown Los Angeles landscape. Reasonably upkept and clean. There are statues of dogs in the park as decoration, benches for sitting, a little walking trail you can circle around.
