Los Angeles builds its parks on hillsides and on reclaimed ground. Griffith Park holds a whole mountain range inside the city — more than 4,200 acres of chaparral ridge and canyon, with over fifty miles of trail. Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area in the Baldwin Hills and Ernest E. Debs Regional Park above the Arroyo Seco do the same at a smaller scale. Against them sit the flat, walkable places: the museum campus and sunken rose garden of Exposition Park, the paved mile around the water at Echo Park, the twelve stepped acres of Gloria Molina Grand Park falling toward City Hall.
What separates them is scale and gradient. Some read as a ribbon — Beverly Hills Garden Park is a strip of lawn, clipped hedge and specialty gardens running twenty-three blocks — others are too large to finish in a lifetime of visits. Much of this green is recovered ground: a failed reservoir basin, a capped oil field, a railroad yard. Start from how far you want to walk and how much climb you will accept, then check the approach: rail reaches some of these gates and misses others by a mile.

With a small child, stay on flat ground: the paved mile around the water at Echo Park, the splash pad at Gloria Molina Grand Park, the ten-minute Children’s Woodland Trail in Ernest E. Debs Regional Park. For a hard hour of climbing, the ridge spine of Runyon Canyon Park; for a big picnic, the hundred-odd tables of Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area. In summer count the shade: the oaks of Vista Hermosa Natural Park have it, the open lawn of Los Angeles State Historic Park does not. The greenest hills and clearest views come in winter, a day or two after rain.
Read the list for what it is: ten parks in the central basin and its hills, with the coast, the San Fernando Valley and the outer suburbs left out. Half are hillsides with sustained climbs and no water above the gate; with a stroller or a wheelchair, stay with Echo Park and Beverly Hills Garden Park. There are no cycling routes here, evening lighting is the exception, and in fire season the hill parks can close at short notice.
