History of San Antonio

Mount San Antonio has a long history because it was home to the Tongva people for centuries. The peak was most likely named San Antonio after Antonio Maria Lugo. In 1810, he gained the Spanish concession to Rancho San Antonio, and in 1816, he was elected mayor of Los Angeles. He built the oldest house in the area on the ranch.

The locals refer to it as Mount Baldy or Old Baldy. This is a reference to the barren Baldy Bowl area. The mountain is located in the Los Angeles National Forest.

During the California Gold Rush, miners hoped to strike gold on the mountain.

How to get to the top?

There are several trails that may lead Los Angeles residents or hikers to the top of Mount San Antonio. The popular Baldy Bowl Trail, which stretches for 14.2 kilometers, is one of them. This is a challenging hike with a moderate degree of difficulty. There are a lot of people who strive to hike up the trail because the views from the top are definitely worth the effort.

To avoid crowds, experienced travelers are advised to hike Mount Baldy as early as possible, preferably at daybreak. If you want to check for snow and poor conditions, you only need to do a few things:

  • check out the Mt Baldy Notch ski report
  • check out the weather forecast at the top of Mount Baldy. Thanks to this information, you will be acquainted with the temperature and whether there is wind
  • you can also use other online resources to check snow cover.

If there is snow or bad weather, it is best to postpone the hike up Mount Baldy until another day. Despite everything, even expert climbers die in such conditions, thus it is important to take this seriously.
