The Tesla Gigafactory in California and the automation of the battery manufacturing process

Tesla shares keep going up. The American electric car manufacturer produces four models at various plants around the world. The Gigafactory creates batteries as well as solar technologies for the brand. The company is constantly developing. Los-Angeles.Name tells more about the plant in California.

A huge factory in Nevada

The company, based out of Sparks, Nevada, started manufacturing battery parts on January 4, 2017. The Tesla Gigafactory covers 5.5 million square feet in Fremont. It’s a huge electric vehicle production that reached 13 million square feet in 2018. The Tesla Kato Road Facility plant occupies the territory of the former SolarCity complex and the annual battery capacity reaches 10 GW/h.

Cooperation with the Panasonic Gigafactory was an important stage in the company’s development. Thanks to it, it will be possible to achieve zero consumption and automate the manufacturing process.

The Tesla Fremont plant in California was opened in 2010 and the number of employees has long exceeded 10 thousand people. It reached 22 thousand in August 2022. It is the former GM Fremont Assembly and Toyota/GM NUMMI plant. The factory produces the following products: S, 3, X, Y.

Modern factories

Three Tesla factories are located in the US and one is in China.

  1. The Fremont plant is located outside of San Francisco and is the main location for the electric vehicles production.
  2. Gigafactory 1 – Giga Nevada. This is the first of the growing production capacities of the company. It produces electric motors, as well as lithium-ion batteries for the sedan Model 3 and energy storage devices. The manufacturer has planned expansion.
  3. Giga New York in Buffalo is focused on solar energy instead of electric cars. The plant was launched in 2014.
  4. The fourth factory is Giga Shanghai, which is the newest plant and the second one that assembles cars. Construction began in 2018, and since then, the company has doubled in size.

The history of the Tesla Fremont Factory

This plant is managed by the Tesla company. It was opened in 1962 under the name General Motors’ Fremont Assembly. Later, this enterprise became a joint venture between GM and Toyota. Tesla became the owner only in 2010.

The company planned to build a plant in New Mexico in 2007. However, this decision was canceled. It should become a central delivery location. Then, new rumors spread regarding the construction of a separate plant in San Jose, California. Due to the high cost, the company continued to search for alternative solutions.

The plant is located in South Fremont County. Previously, the Union Pacific Railroad used to transport finished cars. The freight railroad was launched in 1862 under the Pacific Railroad Act. The railway is still functioning but it has been removed near the plant.

A profitable deal

Tesla announced that it was buying 210 acres of the company’s land on May 20, 2010. Its total area is 370 acres. Such an investment cost Tesla owners $42 million. As promised by the new owners, the employees kept their jobs.

Other plants have cut production during the pandemic but the one in Fremont has been an exception. It posted the highest weekly output in North America in 2021. At the same time, Elon Musk hoped to enhance production capacity at the plant by 50% over the next few years. This is exactly what he talked about at the shareholders’ meeting.
