Los Angeles farmers’ markets. Your guide to choosing fresh produce

Los Angeles residents love farmers’ markets (FaMs), as that’s where they can buy fresh and organic produce. Besides, these markets serve as community centers that often host incredible events with live music and children’s entertainment. The Los Angeles Name will help you navigate your way through a guide to the city FaMs.

Downtown Certified FaM

It is about the Historic Downtown FaM, which is the only certified market in the area. It is curated by a diverse community of Downtown Los Angeles residents. It was launched in 2012 and is held every Sunday on W. 5th St. (between S. Spring and S. Broadway) from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Los Angeles residents can select farm-fresh produce, enjoy local food and listen to live music.

Central Avenue FaM

It is a market on South Central Avenue in South Los Angeles that has become known as the heart of Los Angeles’ African-American community. Not only is it fresh produce, but it is also a mecca for jazz and R&B.

The Central Avenue FaM is located at 4301 S. Central Ave, where a small group of farmers gather to sell a variety of fresh produce from their own farms. Visitors will be impressed by the wide selection of produce, nuts, dried fruits and fresh juices.

The market hosts family oriented events like healthy food and arts and crafts demonstrations. Visitors can look into the workshops and become a part of something bigger, such as seasonal events for the whole community. Children and adults alike can enjoy master classes in arts and handicrafts as leisure activities.

Central Avenue FaM is open every Thursday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm (or 10:00 am to 3:00 pm).

Its history dates back to 2003. Since then, it has offered a variety of foods and dishes every week, including dried fruits, nuts, vegetables, strawberries, hummus, seasonal produce, fish and shrimp tacos, eggs, potatoes, oranges, hot sauces, salsas, honey and seasonal fruits. Additionally, Griffith Family Farms provides seasonal organic produce.

Fresh juices and flowers are also available at the market.

Crenshaw FaM

Located on the Promenade at Cinemark Baldwin Hills, this market is presented by a community of local farmers. They always offer fresh produce because they value their reputation. Here, you can find not only locally grown produce but also spices, sprouts, nuts, delicious bread and other baked goods. Additionally, the market features a selection of fresh flowers.

The market hosts monthly cooking demonstrations (master classes), tastings and children’s events. Passionate DJs provide music to enhance the atmosphere of these events.

The market is open on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and serves the following neighborhoods: Angeles Mesa, Hyde Park, Leimert Park, View Park/Windsor Hills and Baldwin Hills.

This FaM offers a variety of fresh produce, including seasonal organic vegetables and strawberries, stone fruits, tomatoes and sprouts. You can also find fresh juices and smoothies, micro greens, gourmet tamales, traditional pastries from Mommie Helen’s Bakery (including sweet potato pie), cane juice and local honey.

Hollywood FaM

It opened in 1991 and immediately gained the trust of visitors as well as star placement. California had only a handful of FaMs at the time. Over time, Hollywood FaM grew in size, subsequently becoming a place where more than 160 farmers, producers and chefs offer their top quality products.

In addition to fresh produce, you will find handmade gifts, fruit and vegetable starts from the favorite Logan’s garden shop. The atmosphere is enhanced by cooking demonstrations from master chefs, followed by tastings, live music and various children’s activities. You may also encounter some of the most renowned authors in the food industry at Hollywood FaM.

The market is located at the intersection of Ivar and Selma Avenues and is open on Sundays from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The opening of the Hollywood FaM was an instant success as it united farmers and producers from Ventura County and the central San Joaquin region.

East Hollywood Certified FaM

It was established in 2012 with the assistance of the Thai Community Development Center. It aims to improve access to fresh, local produce at affordable prices in the East Hollywood neighborhood. It serves as an example of how to encourage healthy eating habits with its focus on fresh produce.

The market is located at the Hollywood/Western Metro station and is open Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

South Pasadena FaM

That’s where visitors can enjoy produce from certified farmers. They harvest their produce within 24 hours of the sale. Another nice thing about the FaM is that local food is available, including local ice cream, as well as options for a quick and incredibly delicious snack.

The market is a central hub for the community, representing local businesses and nonprofit organizations. Its grounds host regular free events, including the Health and Wellness Festival, the annual flu shot clinic, Christmas tree lighting and many other fun events.

The FaM is located at 920 Meridian Ave and is open on Thursdays from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Burbank Certified FaM

This farmers market is located in the San Fernando Valley, serving the community since 1983. The market represents the community of organic producers. It is also unique in that the market is non-profit, meaning that all funds raised go to charity. The majority of the funds go to the Providence St. Joseph Hospital Foundation. The hospital provides medical care to those who can’t afford it. After the market ends, the farmers donate unsold food to Food Forward.

The market is located at 101 N. Glenoaks Blvd. (at Olive Ave. and Glenoaks Blvd.) and is open every Saturday from  8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

The popularity of farmers’ markets

The number of FaMs in Los Angeles exceeds 50, which is impressive. Their popularity continues to grow with each passing year. In summary, a FaM is a gathering of local farmers and food vendors who meet on a scheduled day and time. There are no restrictions on where the market can be held or who can participate.

The primary difference with supermarkets is that producer farmers grow and harvest their own produce. Moreover, if farmers were to sell their produce to grocery stores or supermarkets, they would have to cooperate with distributors, which would increase the price.

Whether young people, couples, or seniors, all come to FaMs. Some actually need fresh produce for a quality, healthy diet, while others love the atmosphere of such places, which does not compare to the ordinary supermarket. Plus, the prices of produce are often more affordable. All you need to do is to keep an eye on the days and hours when one or another market is open.

Exploring Los Angeles takes more than just famous architectural landmarks or other iconic places. FaMs are an opportunity to get a better feel for the atmosphere and flavor of the area while enjoying fresh produce.
